By Justine Firnhaber-Baker

I am primarily a political historian of later medieval France, whose work relies on archival sources to explore questions about legitimate authority, the conceptual constitution of the community, and the use of violence.
I earned my PhD from Harvard University before moving to the UK for a post-doctoral fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford. I have been a lecturer and then senior lecturer at the University of St Andrews since 2010. My publications include The Jacquerie of 1358: A French Peasants' Revolt (Oxford, 2021) and Violence and the State in Later Medieval Languedoc (Cambridge, 2014), and articles in Past & Present, The Journal of Medieval History, Speculum, and French History.
